2014 York County Junior High Festival String Orchestra
Once again we are planning the string orchestra at the York County Junior High Music Festival on Friday and Saturday, February 7 and 8, 2014 at Bonny Eagle Middle School in Buxton, Maine. The snow date is February 28 and March 1, 2014. On Friday afternoon from 2:30 - 5:00PM the students will have sectional rehearsals, and on Saturday they will rehearse from 9:00AM to 2:00PM with their conductor in the morning and give a concert, along with the chorus and the band, at 3:00PM. The orchestra is open to honors level string players in the
7th or 8th grade who live or go to school in York County.
There will be no auditions. Students should be nominated by their orchestra director or by their private string teacher, if there is no orchestra at their school. Homeschooled students are welcome, but a parent or private music teacher must serve as their chaperone for the duration of the festival. Lynne McMahon is managing the orchestra, so your nominations should be sent to her by email as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, November 8th. Please list your students by instrument, in order of proficiency. In addition, a violin student's nomination should include a recommendation for 1st or 2nd violin section, and indicate which violinists are comfortable in the upper positions . If we receive too many nominations for a particular section, we will choose the most advanced students. The participation fee is $10.00 per student.
Here is the minimum proficiency level for the festival orchestra students:
1. Student must be able to read and play all notes on all four strings in first position in the keys of G, D, C, F, A, and relative minor keys.
2. Student should be familiar with several bowing styles including slurs, detache, martele, legato, and staccato. Can play in 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4 time signatures. 3. A student's ability to play with vibrato and shifting are indicators of higher proficiency.
Please pass this information on to anyone you know who may have eligible students. Additionally, if you would be willing to run one of the sectional rehearsals on Friday, please let me know. We need as much help as possible on both days of the festival. Please be involved!
Thank you for your support! We will do everything we can to make this a great experience for your students.
